Vaidehi
and Shrivalli Shine as India Defeat Chinese Taipei at Billie Jean King Cup
Pune,
April 11, 2025: India’s dynamic duo, Vaidehi Chaudhari and Shrivalli
Bhamidipaty, powered the home team to a crucial 2-1 victory over Chinese
Taipei, moving India one step closer to a playoff berth at the Billie Jean King
Cup Asia-Oceania Group 1. Held at the Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex in
Pune, the tie marked India's third consecutive win, placing them second on the
leaderboard in this prestigious tournament organised by MSLTA in collaboration
with ITF, AITA, and PMDTA.
Vaidehi
Chaudhari set the tone, clinching her second singles win of the tournament
against Fang An Lin. After taking the first set convincingly, she overcame a
spirited fightback to secure a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory in a two-hour, nine-minute
battle.
Next
up, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty continued her stellar form, notching her fourth
consecutive singles win. The 304-ranked Indian overcame world no. 207 Joanna
Garland 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in a gripping two-hour, 38-minute contest, sealing the
tie for India.
Although
the experienced Indian doubles pair of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare lost
the final rubber to Yi Tsen Cho and Fang-Hsien Wu 2-6, 6-4, 6-10, the overall
win was enough to keep India in strong playoff contention.
Team
India, backed by Suhana and powered by the Sports Authority of India and the
Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare (Maharashtra), now faces Korea Republic in
a must-win clash on Friday.
