Senior Open Ranking Tournament Begins in Uttar Pradesh

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officially commenced the Senior
Open Ranking Tournament 2026 at Nandininagar, Gonda, Uttar Pradesh,
with top wrestlers from across the country competing for national rankings. The
prestigious national-level event features 593 wrestlers participating
across 10 weight categories, making it one of the major domestic
wrestling competitions of the season.

Punia Marches into Final; Haryana Star Dominates 92kg Freestyle Category
In
the 92kg freestyle category, Deepak Punia of Haryana delivered a
series of disciplined and dominant performances to secure his place in the
final. In the semifinal bout, Deepak Punia defeated fellow Haryana
wrestler Raja by an impressive 11-1 margin in just 02:53
minutes, showcasing complete control on the mat.

Following
his commanding semifinal victory, Deepak Punia will now face another
Haryana wrestler, Vansh, in the final clash for the 92kg title,
promising an exciting contest between two strong competitors from the state.

Advances in Heavyweight Category; Hard-Fought Win Over Anirudh in 125kg Bout
In
the 125kg heavyweight category, Rohit secured an important
victory over fellow Haryana wrestler Anirudh in Match No. 179.
Despite strong defensive efforts from Anirudh, Rohit managed to
score crucial points at decisive moments and advanced to the next round, ending
Anirudh’s campaign in the tournament.

Speaking
about the tournament, WFI President Shri Sanjay Singh said, “It is
encouraging to see wrestlers from all over India competing at the Senior Open
Ranking Tournament 2026. This platform allows wrestlers to test themselves
against the country’s best athletes in their respective weight categories and
improve their national rankings. Such a bottom-up system will strengthen Indian
wrestling both domestically and internationally.”
