Grand Ocean Challenge at Gateway of India

Mumbai is set to witness a thrilling display of courage, endurance, and aquatic excellence as the prestigious and historic 62nd Sunk Rock Ocean Swimathon 2026 will be held on Sunday, 22 February 2026, at the iconic Gateway of India. This major open-water swimming event will be officially inaugurated by the newly elected Mayor of Mumbai, Ritu Tawde. The competition is not just a sporting event but a true test of determination and skill, where swimmers will take on the powerful waves of the Arabian Sea. Hundreds of swimmers from across Maharashtra are fully prepared to showcase their strength and talent in this prestigious ocean event.

Historic Legacy and Organised Planning:

The event is being organised by the Maharashtra State Amateur Aquatic Association (MSAAA) under the guidance of its President Anand Mane and Secretary Rajendra Palkar, ensuring professional and systematic execution. All participating swimmers are required to report at 7:30 am, and the races will begin between 10:30 am and 11:30 am. Swimmers must depart by boat at 9:00 am to reach the designated starting point in the sea. The event continues to uphold its long-standing tradition as one of Maharashtra’s most respected open-water swimming competitions.

Three Competitive Race Distances for Different Age Groups:
The swimathon will feature three challenging race distances of 1 km, 2 km, and 5 km, allowing swimmers of different age groups and abilities to participate. The 1 km race is reserved for young swimmers aged 8–9 years and for para swimmers (open category), providing them with a valuable competitive platform. The 2 km race will include swimmers from the 10–11 years, 12–13 years, and 46–55 years age groups, combining youth and experienced participants. The most demanding 5 km race will feature swimmers from the 14–15 years, 16–25 years, and 26–45 years categories in both men’s and women’s divisions, testing their stamina, speed, and mental strength in open-sea conditions.

Attractive Prizes and Prestigious Fastest Swimmer Titles:
Winners in each category will receive cash prizes, e-certificates of merit, attractive gifts, and medals for the top three finishers. In addition, the fastest male and female swimmers across the 1 km, 2 km, and 5 km races will be honoured with the prestigious Fastest Swimmer Trophy and the coveted Rolling Trophy. Winning these trophies is considered a major achievement and a mark of excellence in open-water swimming.

Strong Safety Measures and Medical Support:

The organisers have ensured comprehensive safety arrangements for all participants. Medical facilities, trained rescue teams, and safety personnel will be present throughout the event to handle any emergency situations. Detailed planning has been done to ensure that swimmers can compete confidently and safely in the challenging ocean environment.

Major Opportunity for Maharashtra Swimmers and Public Appeal:
This historic swimathon provides a significant opportunity for swimmers from Maharashtra to demonstrate their open-water swimming skills and gain recognition at higher levels. Secretary Rajendra Palkar has appealed to citizens to attend the event and encourage the swimmers, highlighting the importance of community support in motivating athletes. The Sunk Rock Ocean Swimathon is not only a competition but also a celebration of Maharashtra’s proud swimming tradition and an inspiration for future generations of swimmers. Mumbai is now fully prepared to witness an exciting and memorable ocean swimming spectacle this Sunday.
